Location:  Banbury Center
Date:  Sunday May 30, 2010

Organizing Committee:

  • Marlene & Jim C.
  • Ray & Yvette F.
  • Cheryl T.
  • Ann V.
  1. As summer is approaching, the May meeting organizers used this time of the year as the central theme of the meeting.  First off, we had a display contest where participants came up ingenious ways to present Department 56 lithouses in a summer setting:
    • Cherie created the display contest winner (below - first from the left) using the Snow Village Vineland Estates Winery lithouse on a tray surrounded by grapes, wine corks, picnic tables as well as bottles of real wine.
    • Second place entry (below - second from the left) was created by Barry using the Halloween Series’ Shipwreck Lighthouse in a beach setting.  Take a closer look and you can see skeletons sunbathing on the beach and swimming and fishing in the lake!
    • Darlene used the Sweetbriar Cottage from the Dickens’ Village Series as the central focus for her display (below – third from the left).   She created a peaceful cottage seaside scenery.  Because of her love of flowers, Darlene lined her display with a plentiful supply of colourful flowers.
    • Eric created a display reminiscent of the 60s with the Snow Village Gus’s Drive-In (below – fourth from the left).  His clever use of classic cars and Route 66 references certainly transformed viewers to a totally different era than what we are today.  Ice cream float anyone?

  2. Since June traditionally is a wedding month, Yvette started off the meeting with interesting wedding customs and traditions she found on the Internet.  Apparently, there are meanings to wedding dress colours.   Most brides today marry in white to symbolize maidenhood.   But do you know the following?

Married in White, you have chosen right,
Married in Blue, your love will always be true,
Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl,
Married in Brown, you will live in town,
Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead,
Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow,
Married in Green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in Pink, your spirit will sink,
Married in Grey, you will go far away,
Married in Black, you will wish yourself back

  3. Some club members brought their wedding photographs to show the group (how pretty and handsome they were at their weddings!).   Some were courageous enough to speak about funny incidents that occurred at or around their wedding days.

  4. The group activity of the meeting was designing postcards using rubber stamps.  Ann, as a scrapbooking expert, showed everyone scrapbooks she made for Robert and herself and explained how putting stamp marks on scrapbooks could further enhance the subject matter.  She brought a whole slew of rubber stamps with different shapes, sizes and designs for everyone to use.  Needless to say, fun was had by all.
